count on it

I know it is pretentious for GP to call itself Oilerville but what the hell people are sure having a lot of fun up here this weekend so we'll just put it in quotes and go with it.
I finally had a chance to watch some of this new style of hockey and I felt we watched three different game last night. Game one - in the first period we did not have any penalties other then the obstruction type. The boys were skating quickly up and down the ice but accomplishing nothing. Everyone seemed afraid to drive the net or get physical and scoring chances were not being created. The Storm's best shot of the first 16 minutes was resounding clang off the post by Lloyd which of couse did not register as a shot. With 4 min. to go in th first the shots were something like Storm - 1;MOB - 2.
Game 2 - Starting very late in the 1st and for most of the 2nd the teams started to go to the net and get some chances. The MOB did not capitalize on their PP's and unless they prove this was a case of bus legs Gord will be doing some serious retooling. If they can not show some better offence, this will be a very different team when we face them in a couple of months.
Game 3 - in the 3rd there were only 2 or 3 obstruction type penalties as the ref was kept busy calling roughing, kneeing, fighting, hitting from behind, butt ending, etc. Just another AJHL game where one team starts to feel they are out of this one and both teams start wanting to even scores from the first 2 periods.
That was just my general impressions of the game. I did also notice that even in the third there was less stick work (note the absence of a lot of stick penalties like slashing). Was this just this game or has anyone noticed players getting into the habit of keeping their stick to themselves as a reult of new rules. All the power plays did chop the game up and we will be awhile finding out what the regular lines will look like but I think (wishful thinking?) we may be surprised at how fast the players adapt. The old habits are not as ingrained at 18 as at 28.
